Codex + Banana Art Lab

Generate images in Codex, and see them on your canvas

Two commands connect Codex to Banana Art Lab. Codex can then generate images with Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2, Seedream, Z-Image and more while it works on your project, and lay out the prompts and results on a Banana Art Lab canvas you can keep editing.

    Setup

Connect Codex to Banana Art Lab

    1

    Add the server

Run this once in your terminal:

codex mcp add banana-art-lab --url https://trynanobanana.net/mcp
    2

Codex opens trynanobanana.net in your browser; approve access there. If it does not open, run:

    codex mcp login banana-art-lab
    3

    Ask for images

Start a Codex session and describe what you need. Codex calls generate_image and can download the results into your project or place them on a canvas.

    Your canvas, in sync

Codex makes the images. You keep working on them.

Name a canvas and Codex puts the prompt and every result on it, connected like a workflow. Open it at trynanobanana.net/canvas to compare versions side by side, move them around, or run another generation from the same prompt. An open canvas shows new results within about ten seconds.

It works the other way too: Codex can read a canvas you made, with its text and images, and build on it, for example making a story-format version of every image.

    Things to ask

    • “Generate an Open Graph image for this blog post with GPT Image 2 Saver at 16:9 and save it next to the post.”
    • “Make four variations of our mascot with Nano Banana 2 and put them on a new canvas called "Mascot".”
    • “Read the canvas "Spring campaign" and make a 9:16 story version of every image on it.”
    • “List the Banana Art Lab models with their prices, then make a 2K poster of a night market with Nanobanana Pro.”

    Questions

How do I add image generation to Codex?

Run "codex mcp add banana-art-lab --url https://trynanobanana.net/mcp" and approve access in the browser window that opens (or run "codex mcp login banana-art-lab"). Codex can then use the generate_image tool in any session.

Why use Banana Art Lab in Codex?

One connection gives Codex seven image models, Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2, GPT Image 2 and Seedream among them, paid from one credit balance, plus canvases where you and Codex work on the same images. GPT Image 2 Saver costs 2 credits per image at any resolution.

What if an image takes longer than Codex waits?

Codex waits about 60 seconds for a tool. If images are not ready within about 45 seconds, generate_image returns a job id and Codex fetches the images with get_generation shortly after. You are charged once.

    What does it cost?

Connecting is free. Each image uses Banana Art Lab credits at the website's prices, from 2 credits for GPT Image 2 Saver at any resolution. New accounts get 10 free credits when they sign up; credit packs start at $9.99 for 4,000 credits.

    Where do the images go?

Your assistant gets a link to each image, and can download it into your project. If you name a canvas, the prompt and the images are also placed on it at trynanobanana.net/canvas, where you can rearrange, compare and regenerate them. An open canvas shows new results within about ten seconds.

    Can it see my canvases?

Only after you approve it on trynanobanana.net, and only for the account you approved. It can list, read and edit your canvases, and generate images with your credits. It cannot reach files on your computer through Banana Art Lab. Disconnect it any time in Canvas Settings → AI tools.
